Q. What hobbies and recreational activities should I avoid?

A. Patients often ask, "When can I play golf again?" or, "When can I swim or ride a bike again?" The answer usually is, "As soon as you are ready." However, this depends on the stress of the activity. It is generally just a matter of getting warmed up and used to doing those kinds of activities again. You should begin these activities in a gradual, guided manner to avoid injury and complications. Be aware of your limitations and safety. Avoid activities that strain your spine or increase your pain.

Walking is probably the most ideal exercise choice throughout and beyond your rehabilitation. The natural trunk motion helps flush out any swelling or extra chemicals that can build up and cause pain. It's a great exercise choice for giving safe weight bearing to the joints and for managing day-to-day stress. Swimming is an excellent choice for early exercise. The buoyancy of the water reduces the stress on the joints of the back and legs, enabling you to move more freely.
