Q. What does a CAT scan show?

A. The CT Scan (Computer Assisted Tomography) is an X-ray test that is similar to both the plain X-ray and the MRI because it shows bones and soft tissues. The Scan forms a set of cross-sectional "slices" that can show disc problems and degeneration of bones including bone spur formation or facet hypertrophy (enlargement). CAT Scan images are not as clear as X-ray or an MRI. To make the soft tissues easier to see the CAT Scan is often combined with a myelogram (dye injection into the spinal canal).
